One More Week of Hiatus & Searchin For The Light

Radio shows will resume when the semester starts. Showtime will be changing from 6 - 7 PM on Thursdays to sometime on either a Monday or Wednesday... new time will be announced as soon as it's confirmed. Meanwhile, here at HQ, we're working on getting the UNIFIED RIGHT live tape out before the end of January. We also did some helping out with this fanzine...

Brandon Brandt from St. Pete put out this skateboarding and music fanzine called Searchin' for the Light for FYA Fest last week. If you didn't nab a copy then, now is your chance to read the scans online. Featuring interviews with Ned of Title Fight, Soft Hoagie Rolls, Joshua Lother and Sick of Talk (which I play guitar for and will soon have a release on ECR). Get the scans here.

Semester End & Radio News

A fun last "official" day of the fall semester in the studio.
From left to right: Street Justin, Julio, myself, Tyler, Steph, Allison and Brandon.

This semester was a ton of fun. I brought Ybor City's Mushmind in the studio for an LP listening party and interview, I got to do an in depth interview with Hanson Meyer of the original Uniform Choice line-up, and I had co-hosts frequently which made the show a lot more fun to do and listen to.

In the coming weeks I'll be continuing my show over the winter break, so keep tuning in Thursdays 6-7 PM. The archive system is currently down, but hopefully the links will go live again soon. I'll update them as soon as I know what's going on.

Clouded - Inheritance 7"

Belgian hardcore/metal-core from 1998. My friend Cory tipped me off to this on YouTube and I couldn't find a download with the tracks split up so hear it is. Also includes a fifth hidden acoustic track on the CD version. Played a track on the show last week, here's the full record.

Krakatoa - Clouds Burned By Sunshine 7"

Two track 7" side project of Carl Skildum (Threadbare) and Dave Walker (Harvest). Recommended by my good buddy Lennon (Plead Your Case zine strikes again!) and compiled the information, music and photos from a few different blogs (Thanx to Stuck in the Past, Madblastsofchaos...) to bring you a comprehensive download. Includes scans of artwork, inserts and tracks all in one convenient place.

Originally pressed on clear and black vinyl, as far as I can tell. Would love to get in touch with any of the members to learn a little more history on the band, see if they had any other merchandise or anything.

Really unique couple of songs here. "Indulgence", the second track, is right up my alley. A great listen for the non conventional core fan.

Gas - No More Hiroshima 7"

Classic sounding punk from 1982 outta Japan. Originally released as a one sided flexi-disc. Couldn't find a download with the tracks split up so decided to do so myself.

To start off this long awaited post, here are some in-studio pictures from various times over the past semester. Feel free to send me any photos you may have snapped as a friend or guest in-studio!

Group shot from With Increase's live studio performance. (L to R): Garrett a.k.a. myself, Street Justin, Will "Skates" Steinbrecher, Travis "Travvy Mac" Lowe & Doug Fore.

Some good friends and regular guests on the show. (L to R): Luigi, myself and T. Cable.

Exact Change Radio has been graciously featured in PLEAD YOUR CASE #9. Feel free to pick up a copy via the PYC online store or stay tuned in the upcoming weeks for a trivia and giveaway. I have a few copies of my own as well, so if you are in the Tampa area and want to grab one - get in touch.

Plead Your Case #9. Read up. Knowledge is power.

The following albums are coming soon for download: Brandon Hardcore Compilation: Music For The Kids, Gross National Product 7", Gas - No More Hiroshima 7" and Krakatoa - Clouds Burned By Sunshine 7". Those will all be up within the next week.

The next post will be a constantly updated archive of direct links to every radio show thus far. Hopefully this way people will be able to find my show without going through the bulls radio website. I understand it can be confusing if you're not a frequent user.

Stay tuned, this is the first of many major updates.

Tomorrow's Show & Other News

Tomorrow will be a show unlike any you've heard before, as often I don't play much metal. To get in the mood for Halloween the next day, I'll have a playlist of my favorite black metal for the full hour. Shows like this will be few and far between so if you're a fan of BM, be sure to listen in!

I've had a lot of friends come in the past few weeks co-hosting the show with me, including Joser, Luigi, Tyler of tha Unit and Justin with the IIIKD demo track. Be sure to catch up on all the old shows in the archive

Later this week I will be posting a teaser flyer for the long-awaited ISSUE #1 of EXACT CHANGE FANZINE. I'll be giving a sneak peak at some of the content and interviews included.

On a related note, the EXACT CHANGE DISTRO is winding down for now. There just isn't a high enough demand for another distro in my area, I don't travel enough to make it worth while and I don't have time to open a webstore. I've got one copy each of the following records for anyone interested in mail order or pick up if you're in the area.

BACK TO BACK - FLESH AND BONE 7" (Lockin Out) - $5
VIOLENCE TO FADE - TUG OF WAR 7" (Life to Live) - $5
SIDE BY SIDE - YOU'RE ONLY YOUNG ONCE 12" (Revelation) - $12
SUPERTOUCH - THE EARTH IS FLAT 12" (Revelation) - $12
UP FRONT - SPIRIT 12" (Smorgasbord) - $12

Saigon - Annihilation 7"

I was lucky enough to have Hanson send me the mp3's of this record after our phone interview. One song from this 7" was played on last weeks show, so now you can check out the rest. Here is a small blurb of how Hanson described Saigon...

"The band Saigon formed in Orange County, California sometime late in 1980 or early 1981 and played the circuit throughout southern California until 1982. The band members were: Todd A. Hall – Vocals; Jessie Bingaman – Guitar; Adam Maples (aka. Adam Bomb) – Drums; Eddie Wayne – Bass.

In 1981, Saigon released its only record as an EP on their own label, WWIII Records(...) The band was influenced by many early New York and California punk bands and Todd styled his live performances after Iggy Pop. They played with other local bands such as Christian Death, Lost Cause, the Lewd, Hari-Kari, the Dischords and Modern Warfare, but even played with punk legends such as the Misfits(...) In 1982, Saigon disbanded when Adam and Eddie made the move to record and tour as permanent members of the band Legal Weapon(...)

All songs copyrighted 1981 by Saigon."

You can read more about Saigon via Hanson's YouTube channel, specifically here.

ECR 001 - With Increase "Live on Bulls Radio" Cassette

The labels first release is officially completed. With Increase came in to the Exact Change Radio show at the Bulls Radio studio on Thursday 6/26/2014 and recorded a few live tracks followed by an interview. After the show we were chatting and decided to put out the session on this tape. Recommended for fans of early Tooth & Nail bands such as Strongarm, Focal Point and, my personal favorite, Focused.

First run limited to 50 copies, with some lemon lime inserts keepin' it fresh. The band is selling the yellow copies with them on their current tour and the green inserts are a label exclusive. If you would like a copy, either go see With Increase on tour and pick one up or shoot me an e-mail at garrettxstrobel@gmail.com. Tapes are $3 in person and $5 post paid in the USA (just send the money to my PayPal account via the aforementioned e-mail address). Click on the photo below to see the dates of With Increase's tour.

For the full, free audio of the radio set and interview, go here. Also be sure to pick up Exact Change Fanzine numero uno, which will contain more stories and pictures from the radio set!

Awake! - Beliefs 7"

Another record I picked up at Planet Retro in St. Pete of another Brandon hardcore band. Signed by two of the dudes on the back and some really great photos inside the 5 paneled insert that I included in the download. This record was recommended to me by my pal Jullian B., who did a really great write up a few years back in his zine about Awake! that I might take the time to scan and upload later.

Four tracks of pretty interesting melodic hardcore straight outta 1989 that have singing, shouting, and even a rap part. The record itself was, again, in pretty rough condition, so quite a few noticeable pops in the quieter parts... did the best I could to fix the pops without damaging the audio. If you have better quality rips of this record let me know because I can't find it in full anywhere else.

The copy I own also seems to be a second pressing as it is pressed on black vinyl and neither TPOS or Victory records are credited. A few scans of that pressing are available on discogs.

Again, many thanks to Matt D. for helping me rip the audio from this and the next few records I'll be posting.

Slap of Reality - Stuck Inside 7"

Melodic punk/hardcore band from Brandon, FL. This was their first 7" and contained more of an edge than their later releases, which veered in a far more pop direction. I picked up this copy of the 7" from Planet Retro in St. Pete, which Rob Sexton, the drummer of Slap of Reality, now runs.

Their most recent show was June 20th, 2014 in Lakeland. Other than that, they haven't played around much very often. I tried getting in contact with a few of the members to let them know I was posting this and get any more information on the release and the band, but haven't heard back from them yet.

The record wasn't in the most perfect condition and I didn't do any editing other than ripping the songs from vinyl to mp3 (thanks Matt D.), so expect some pops and imperfections. Scans of the insert included in the download.
